San Diego FC is back to face red hot San Jose Earthquakes

San Diego FC returns from the international break this Saturday with a tough road test against the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park.

The Quakes enter the matchup in strong form, sitting third in the Western Conference and riding a three-game winning streak. San Diego, meanwhile, hasn’t been at its best in recent outings, dropping valuable points in its last two matches. Still, this clash sets up as one of the weekend’s most intriguing, with San Diego just one point behind San Jose in fourth place and still unbeaten on the season. All signs point to a highly competitive showdown.

San Jose’s fast start has come as little surprise following the offseason addition of German international Timo Werner. While Werner has yet to find the back of the net, his presence has added a dynamic element to the Quakes’ attack and made him a key piece of their system.

Timo Werner has endured a quiet couple of years, registering limited impact across two clubs. He made just three appearances for RB Leipzig at the beginning of the 2025/2026 season, playing minimal minutes without recording a goal or assist. Following his move to MLS, Werner has featured twice for the San Jose Earthquakes, contributing two assists but still searching for his first goal of the season. Overall, his 2025 form has been defined by restricted playing time and a lack of scoring output, though he has shown flashes of creativity since his transfer. He is listed as questionable for tomorrow’s match.

Aside from Werner’s adjustment, the Earthquakes have adopted a balanced tactical structure, easing away from strict man-marking while maintaining their commitment to quick transitions. The result is a side that still favors tempo and verticality, but with greater defensive discipline and positional organization.

San Diego will face an added challenge on the defensive end, as Christopher McVey is unavailable after receiving a red card in the club’s last match against Real Salt Lake. He will serve a one-game suspension, opening the door for Osvaldo Soe to step into the starting lineup. Soe has seen limited action so far this season, but now has a prime opportunity to establish himself and justify head coach Mikey Varas’ confidence. With Manu Duah and McVey anchoring the back line in recent matches, this could be a pivotal moment for Soe to prove he can be a reliable option when called upon.

Adding to McVey’s suspension, San Diego will also have to navigate a growing list of injuries. Alejandro Alvarado, Andrés Reyes, and Kieran Sargent all remain sidelined, while Pablo Sisniega, Ian Pilcher, and Amahl Pellegrino will be unavailable for this weekend’s match.

Coach Mikey Varas now faces a key decision in how to replace Pellegrino in the lineup. He could turn to Lewis Morgan, who is gradually working his way back into form, or opt for a more natural wide presence in Alex Mighten. There may also be an opportunity to give yougster Bryan Zamble, who has also seen very few minutes but shown nothing less impressive in condition for his age.
