‘Everybody remembers’: Eight years later, Humboldt bus crash still in our hearts

Monday marks the anniversary of a tragedy that impacted the entire country. Scott Thomas — whose 18-year-old son, Evan, was among the young victims — was a recent guest on our ‘Closer Look’ podcast

Monday marks a heartbreaking anniversary for the tight-knit community of Humboldt, Saskatchewan — and all of Canada.

Eight years ago, on April 6, 2018, a transport truck collided with a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team, killing 16 people and injuring 13 others.

The tragic crash plunged the entire country into mourning. People from coast to coast left hockey sticks on their front porches in memory of the victims, while a GoFundMe campaign set up for families and survivors raised an astounding $15.1 million.

“The country wrapped us up in their arms and certainly gave us a lot of warmth, and they still continue to,” said Scott Thomas, whose 18-year-old son, Evan, was killed in the crash.

Thomas was a recent guest on Village Media’s Closer Look podcast. He shared stories about Evan, and about the countless strangers who expressed their condolences in the days, weeks and months after the tragedy.

Thomas also talked about why he chose to forgive the rookie truck driver who caused the accident when he blew through a highway stop sign.

“To hang on to hatred and carry that energy around, it’s too hard,” he said. “The easiest path forward is through forgiveness, and now we can move forward and honour our son in a meaningful way, as opposed to wasting my energy being angry at a man who caused a terrible accident.”
