FRIDAY RECAP – Wings, Terriers strike first in Round 2

REGINA, SK – Dion Schraeder had a Will Munro centring feed bounce off him and in at 18:07 of the second period, and it held up as the winner as the Weyburn Red Wings took a 1-0 series lead over the Flin Flon Bombers with a 2-0 victory in Game 1 Friday.
It was the first time the Bombers had lost in regulation at the Whitney Forum all year; they held a 29-0-1 record at home between Round 1 and the regular season heading into the contest.
Callas Pierce hit the empty net to seal the game with 25 seconds remaining in regulation.
Joey Rocha made 37 stops for his first career playoff shutout, while Charlie Tritt stopped 23 Weyburn shots in defeat.
It was almost a year to the day that the Wings beat the Bombers in Game 1 at the Forum in Round 2 last season. Weyburn went on to defeat Flin Flon in six games.
In Yorkton, Jye Zawatsky whipped a neat backhand high blocker side on Kaden Serpa at the 9:29 mark of the third period to help the Terriers cap off a come-from-behind 3-2 Game 1 win vs. the Battlefords North Stars.
Affiliated call-up Trae Peterson and SJHL Rookie of the Year Cash Lanigan both had goals in the Yorkton rally, after veterans Alessio Nardelli and Josh Knittig staked the North Stars to a 2-0 lead.
Yorkton’s Callum Creig made 29 stops in the win, including on a Kobe Sawyer penalty shot with the game tied at two, 2:09 into the third period.
