Justin Trudeau’s Son, 18, Says His Dad’s Girlfriend Katy Perry Gives Him Music Advice as He Gets Candid About Their Relationship

When Justin Trudeau’s son Xav is looking for advice on his music, he’s able to go to his dad’s girlfriend, singer Katy Perry.

“When I’m really happy with a song [I] send it [to her],” Xav, 18, said of Perry, 41, while appearing on an episode of the Can’t Be Censored podcast. “She’s always happy to give me advice or tell me what I should change.”

The teenager, whose full name is Xavier, went on to say that he has a good dynamic with Perry, who shares her daughter Daisy Dove, 4, with ex Orlando Bloom. Trudeau, 54, shares sons Xav and Hadrian, 12, as well as daughter Ella-Grace, 17, with estranged wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau.

“She’s super nice. She’s super down to earth. She’s great,” Xav said. “I think that my dad’s happy, so that’s important.”

He added that seeing his dad out in pictures with Perry is just like “any other picture of my dad and my mom. Or just my dad.”

“My life is so crazy sometimes. I’m like, ‘What is my life? What the hell?’ ” explained Xav. “I just laugh. The reality of it is, it’s my life. What can I do? What can I change?”

Trudeau and Perry were first linked in the summer, when they were spotted out together in Montreal, Canada. In October, they made their first public appearance as a couple when they attended a cabaret show at the Crazy Horse Paris to mark the “Dark Horse” singer’s birthday, according to TMZ.

This past December, a source told PEOPLE that while Perry wasn’t looking for a boyfriend, the relationship was an “exciting surprise.”

“The only reason this turned into something real is because Justin has been so persistent,” the source told PEOPLE. “She wasn’t looking to date when they first hung out and she certainly wasn’t looking for a boyfriend.”

According to the insider, Perry and Trudeau’s romance came as an “exciting surprise” to her — and the former Canadian prime minister was consistent with his efforts.

“He’s shown her over and over again that he genuinely wants to see her,” the source said. “He’s flown all over the world to spend time with her while she toured. She likes spending time with him.”
