New Hillsboro In-N-Out almost done—but neighbors worry about traffic

HILLSBORO Ore. (KPTV) – One of the first In-N-Out locations in the Portland metro is nearing completion in the Tanasbourne area, and excitement is building.

But some people who live and work nearby say they’re worried the opening could make already-busy roads even more congested.

“I love In-N-Out,” Matt Sander said, adding it’ll be easier to get the food without traveling out of state. “Now I don’t have to go to Palm Desert to get my burger.”

Others focused on one issue: traffic.

“Traffic around the area,” another person said. “It will probably add more traffic.”

Owen Fugit, who works across the street from the construction site, said the area is already hectic.

“The traffic is kind of crazy already,” Fugit said. “I’ve actually been almost hit by a car a couple times on my walk home from work, and I’m just a five minute walk.”

Hillsboro officials say In-N-Out must submit a traffic management plan to the city. That plan must address traffic control, emergency vehicle access, and how traffic will be monitored once the restaurant opens.

City traffic engineers, in coordination with Oregon Department of Transportation, will also need to approve it.

In-N-Out’s chief operating officer, Denny Warnick, said the company is working on it, saying they’re “committed to finalizing a traffic plan that best supports our customers and the surrounding community once we open.”

There’s still no clear timeline for when the Hillsboro In-N-Out will open, but city officials say it won’t serve customers until that traffic mitigation plan is approved.
