Shocked Stockport residents have told of the moment they heard gunshots fired outside their homes – with one saying they later heard screams of ‘he’s dead’.

Police said on Saturday a reported ‘disturbance’ in the Brinnington area of Stockport on Thursday night involved a ‘suspected firearms discharge’, but thankfully no injuries were reported. An investigation is underway and six arrests have been made.

A resident, who asked to not be named, said they were left shocked when they heard three gunshots and saw two cars driving quickly away from the scene.

It happened around the Dent Close and Lapwing Lane area at 10.40pm.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, the resident said: “It was really quick. There was shouting in the street, then three pops. I told my boyfriend, ‘I think somebody’s just been shot’.

“He looked out the window and said ‘yeah, somebody’s screaming he’s dead’. Then three people ran into two cars and drove off.

“I’ve never heard a gun before, so at first I was just thinking ‘I think that was a gun’ and then my partner ran to the window to see what was happening. It all happened so fast – he only saw the end of it.

“It was scary when the police came. CID were here yesterday, but we haven’t been told anything else. Some neighbours said they heard it too and were sure it was a gunshot. There were loads of people outside.”

Other residents, meanwhile, said the incident ‘unnerved’ them, and how they were worried for their children and grandchildren.

As part of the investigation, five men aged between 17 and 45 were arrested on suspicion of affray and have since been bailed, Greater Manchester Police said.

A spokesperson said: “Further enquiries by the police led to warrants being executed at three properties in the Stockport area in the early hours of Saturday. As a result, a 19-year old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and remains in custody.”

Detective Sergeant Kirsty Pierce, from Stockport CID, said: “We understand incidents of this nature can cause concern within the community and, whilst there are several lines of enquiry ongoing, this is believed to be an isolated incident.

“We are currently asking for anyone who has CCTV, has witnessed this incident, or has any other information, to come forward by contacting us on 101 or via our website, quoting incident number 3758 of 09.04.26. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” No further details have been revealed.
