Kitty Foyle took the advantage handed to her to register a first win in a year and a half in the 3m½f handicap hurdle after the well-fancied Byzantium crashed through the rails in dramatic fashion.

The Paul Nicholls-trained 11-8 shot set out to make all and led his two rivals into the home straight, but a straightforward race suddenly went awry after the grey ducked right into the hurdle marker for the final two flights. The horse and jockey Harry Cobden were sent to the ground in the incident.

Harry Cobden and the grey Byzantium enter the straight in front…

…but drama soon follows as Cobden’s mount suddenly veers right with both horse and jockey crashing into the rails. Thankfully both were soon up following the incident

Byzantium and Cobden were swiftly on their feet but the race dwindled down to just two runners, and outsider Kitty Foyle took up the running after the second-last to cruise clear of Sinchi Roca and win by 18 lengths under Robbie David and trainer Daisy Hitchins.

“Even if the other horse had stood up, she was there to win her race anyway,” said Hitchins. “She’s done it very easily in the end.

“She had her first run over three miles in November and we gave her a winter break because she’d been tried quite highly last year, running at the Cheltenham Festival and picking up black type, but she’s a really nice mare and as hardy as you can get.

“She was always going to be better over three miles and we’ve got a lot to look forward to. We’ll pick and choose between jumping and the Flat this summer, but she loves it on the Flat at Newbury, so we might look for a nice pot there.”

Burke treble

Johnny Burke enjoyed a stellar Sunday after seeing off Queens Gamble to seal a treble on Obsessedwithyou in the feature 1m7½f mares’ handicap chase.

The 11-4 shot’s success followed up Burke’s wins on Mahler Moon in the 3m1f handicap chase and John Barbour in the 2m5½f handicap hurdle.
