Royal Mail has announced fresh disruption warnings affecting postcodes throughout the UK, including Merseyside. Communities across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are experiencing postal service delays.

The delivery company typically aims to deliver letters and parcels to addresses across the UK six days a week. However, it has confirmed it cannot achieve delivery standards in 51 postcode regions today.

From Monday, April 13, disruption has affected locations such as New Ferry and Prenton.

Royal Mail stated: “We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors.

“In those cases, we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers. We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive.

The postal service has faced backlash regarding late deliveries. Owner Daniel Kretinsky previously told MPs: “Of course I am deeply sorry for any letters that arrive late.”

Nevertheless, he rejected suggestions that Royal Mail’s performance regarding late letter arrivals was worsening. Addressing the Commons Business select committee, Mr Kretinsky commented: “It is not perfect, but it is not catastrophic.”

This month, customers have faced higher stamp costs. First Class stamps have risen to £1.80, while Second Class now stand at 91p. By comparison, a First Class stamp cost just 76p in 2020.

Royal Mail says these increases are due to to escalating delivery expenses as letter volumes decline and the quantity of addresses grows.

Its managing director of letters, Richard Travers, said: “We always consider price changes very carefully, balancing affordability with the rising cost of delivering mail.

“On average, UK adults now spend just £6.50 each year on stamps and there are 70% fewer letters sent than 20 years ago.”

Mr Travers added: “In the meantime, the number of addresses we deliver to has increased by four million to 32 million addresses across the UK.”
