Search underway after crew member falls from Boston-bound cruise ship, Coast Guard confirms

Rescue crews are searching for a crew member after they fell off a cruise ship off the coast of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, late Saturday night, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed to NewsCenter 5.The Coast Guard’s Southeastern New England sector received a report from the Norwegian Breakaway that the crew member was seen falling from the ship on a security camera.Cameras on the ship saw the man fall from an upper deck. The ship then turned around. A ship tracker showed the cruiseliner just off Wellfleet, right before it made a U-turn and headed back to the point where the crew member went overboard.A rescue boat and life rings were deployed at the last known position of the crew member, the Coast Guard said.A Coast Guard helicopter arrived at the scene just after 1 a.m. Sunday morning. Crews from the Coast Guard’s Provincetown station also arrived to assist in the search.It is unclear if the crew member jumped or fell from the ship.”The United States Coast Guard has taken over the search and rescue operation and released the vessel to continue the voyage,” a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said in a statement. “The safety, security, and well-being of our crew is our highest priority. Our thoughts are with the crewmember’s family during this difficult time.”Video taken by passengers and sent to WCVB showed two rescue boats near the ship, apparently searching for someone in the nearby waters. Rachel Goodman, who is an entertainer on the ship, said she heard the maritime emergency signal for man overboard during the last few songs of a performance. “It was the last couple of songs and they said, “‘Code Oscar,'” Goodman said. “Not a lot of guests know what that means. They ended up alerting the guests this morning. said you know, please think of his family and friends and be kind to the staff.”The Breakaway made its return to Boston, docking at the Black Falcon Terminal just before noon.
