Tennessee veteran accused of shooting his wife has died, ending dayslong manhunt, officials say
The veteran accused of shooting his wife before fleeing into a wooded area of northwest Tennessee is dead, officials said Wednesday.

“We can confirm Craig Mark Berry is deceased and no longer a threat to the public,” the U.S. Marshals said in a statement.
He appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Stewart County Sheriff’s Office said.
Berry was found during a search by the department’s tactical unit and agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
A manhunt for Craig Berry started early May 1, hours after deputies responded to a shooting call at a home in Dover, Tennessee, around 1:30 a.m.
Local authorities allege that Berry shot his wife, who attempted to get away from him in her car before he fired. She took off, and he followed in his truck until he crashed and totaled the vehicle, Stewart County Sheriff Frankie Gray said. A motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Berry’s wife survived the shooting and was taken to a medical facility.
On Tuesday, Gray said the wife had been released, describing her injuries as “life-threatening,” but that she overcame them.
Berry, wearing camouflage, was last seen near River Trace Road. He then fled to the wooded area near the home after the shooting.
He was accused of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, domestic assault and leaving the scene of an accident.
A retired special forces veteran, Berry had been described as having had “extensive training in survival tactics,” of being an “excellent swimmer and diver,” and was “in good physical shape,” officials said.
Officials believed he was armed with at least one handgun, an automatic weapon and extra ammunition.
Local officials called in the U.S. Marshals Service to assist with their search by air and land. The agency Wednesday said it was seeking the public’s help in locating Berry and was offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to his arrest.
Gray did not want to speculate on “problems” between the couple as a motive, but noted a possible “financial situation.”
