Swing Sequence: Aaron Rai

Aaron Rai’s swing is designed for accuracy. The Englishman focuses on stability and keeping his upper and lower body in sync with the clubhead, which creates a very consistent clubface through impact. It’s no surprise that he’s often near the top of the tour in fairways hit. Here’s what Rai focuses on to achieve elite accuracy.

Rai has a strong wide stance and lines up his ball position just forward of center. This is unusual for tour pros, but Rai says this position allows him to use more of his body in his downswing.

Rai keeps his upper and lower body moving in sync, turning together to promote rotation later in his swing instead of using his wrists.

Rai makes a wide full-body turn, keeping his upper and lower body connected and his head centered on the ball.

At the top of the swing, Rai’s lower body is coiled and his right leg is fully loaded. He’s made a full shoulder rotation and has kept his head stable but slightly behind the ball—which he likes for the driver.

Because Rai loads so well into his right leg, now he can rotate hard off it at this point in his golf swing.

Rai looks to keep his body rotating at this point in his swing without interruption. The clubface is closing as it comes into impact—that’s how you get it back to square.

As he continues to rotate into impact, Rai looks for his body to stay in sync with a stable and square clubface.

Rai’s hips briefly move backwards at one point as they rotate through. Rory McIlroy’s do this, too. It’s involuntary, but the result of strong oblique muscles contracting forcefully through the ball.

Rai swings within himself, finishing in a balanced position.
