Gamecocks Fall to UCLA in Winner’s Bracket Game

LOS ANGELES – The No. 7 seed South Carolina softball team (31-27) fell to No. 2 seed UCLA (49-8) 7-2 Saturday afternoon (May 16) in the winner’s bracket game of the Los Angeles Regional.

Quincee Lilio led all players going 3-for-3 on the day and reached base in all four plate appearances. The Gamecocks had seven hits on the day while the Bruins had eight. Jori Heard took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in an inning of work. Emma Friedel tossed 3 1-3 innings in relief and struck out six Bruins.

Carolina took the early lead on a leadoff home run by Jamie Mackay in the second. The solo shot to left was her eighth of the season. The Bruins took the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning. They added a two-run double and another two-run home run in the frame.

The Gamecocks got one back when Lilio led off the third with her second home run is as many days and her second of the season. UCLA got it back with solo home run in the fifth.

The Gamecocks will play an elimination game later tonight at 10 p.m. ET against the winner of Cal State Fullerton and Cal Baptist.
