Halifax Fire Deputy Chief Roy Hollett said crews were called at about 1:40 p.m. after someone spotted flames over the tree tops and smelled smoke.
He said the location is off Jenking Boulevard, a suburban area nearly 25 kilometres east of downtown Halifax.
Hollett did not know the size of the fire. He said as of 3:30 p.m. there were at that point no buildings at risk and no requirement for evacuation.
There are no injuries reported.
Hollett urged people to stay away from the area so firefighters could work unhindered.
