Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, is celebrating its 80th anniversary and marking eight decades as the PGA Tour’s longest running host venue for a non-major on Tour.
The field, which was announced on Friday at 5 p.m. ET, includes seven of the top 20 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, but for the first time in his career, past champion Jordan Spieth won’t be there.
“It’s just a rock and a hard place for myself and Scottie and guys who are local, who grew up here,” Spieth told the Dallas Morning News. “There is just such a premium on the elevated events.”
Spieth, a 13-time Tour winner and Dallas native, has a better track record at Colonial than at the Byron Nelson. He recorded a win in 2016, three seconds and four top 5s in 13 career starts. But the last three years he missed the cut in 2023, the only time he failed to play the weekend, with a T-36 and T-37 the last two years. Spieth has played seven of the last eight weeks. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler also opted to skip Colonial this year. He’s never won the event but has finished second twice and has four top 5s in six appearances. J.J. Spaun at No. 9 in the world is the highest-ranked player in the field along with Russell Henley No. 11 and Ludvig Aberg at No. 13. Fan favorites Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas also will be seeking to win the tournament’s famed tartan jacket.
Sponsor exemptions were given to several veterans, including Charley Hoffman, past champion Kevin Kisner, Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson and Camilo Villegas.
The purse for the Charles Schwab Challenge is $9.9 million and the winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points. Ben Griffin is the defending champion.
