P&O Cruises key item requirement: everything you need to know as passengers risk being denied boarding without it.

  • P&O Cruises says all passengers must bring proof of cruise travel insurance or risk being denied boarding. The popular UK cruise line, which operates seven ships from Southampton, including family-friendly vessels like Arvia and Iona, has made insurance mandatory for all guests.
  • P&O states: “Unfortunately, you will be denied boarding, at your own expense, if you’re unable to confirm you have arranged insurance.” Passengers must bring either printed or digital copies of their insurance documentation covering all named travellers for the duration of their trip.
  • The cruise line emphasises that standard travel insurance may not provide adequate cover for cruise-specific situations. P&O says that specialist cruise cover is essential for scenarios such as medical evacuation at sea.
  • The company states: “Standard travel insurance is generally meant for a land-based holiday and as such, won’t cover many of the elements of a cruise holiday.” Failure to declare pre-existing medical conditions could result in costly medical bills.
  • P&O says that emergency treatment could even be refused without proper insurance coverage. The policy applies to all P&O ships, including adult-only vessels Arcadia and Aurora, as the cruise line prepares for peak travel season.
