Diamondbacks vs Rockies live updates. Marte mashing; Arizona leads

Diamondbacks OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. deals with hamstring injury

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. injured his hamstring while running in the game against the Colorado Rockies on May 22, 2026.

Ketel Marte kept his hot streak alive, mashing a massive home run in the fourth inning, and the Diamondbacks lead the Colorado Rockies, 5-2, after five innings on Saturday, May 23, at Chase Field.

Marte’s homer, a 112.4 mph, two-run shot, was his third in his past five games and extended the Diamondbacks’ lead from 3-2 to 5-2. The drive went 424 feet and more than halfway up the right-field bleachers.

Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen has given up two runs through five innings. The Rockies loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth and went on to score two runs, but it could have been worse as Gallen retired the final two batters of the inning after the Rockies loaded the bases again.

Gallen bounced back by tossing a scoreless fifth inning, working around a two-out single.

Marte was in the middle of the Diamondbacks’ three-run third inning rally, as well, drawing a walk to help set the stage of Geraldo Perdomo’s RBI single and Nolan Arenado’s two-run double.

The Diamondbacks are looking to recover from their disappointing loss on Friday night that snapped a five-game winning streak.

Diamondbacks place Gurriel Jr. on IL, promote Tommy Troy

The Diamondbacks placed left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list on Saturday, May 23, with a left hamstring strain and selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Tommy Troy, the club’s first-round pick from three years ago.

Gurriel, who missed the first three weeks of the season recovering from last year’s ACL surgery on his right knee, hurt his hamstring while making the catch on a fly ball in the sixth inning on Friday night.

Manager Torey Lovullo said Gurriel’s strain is relatively minor, to the point that he could be able to play within three or four days, but he added that the prospect of trying to push Gurriel through it did not make much sense to the team. Lovullo suggested a return on the first day he is eligible to be reinstated was a possibility.

“We wanted to make sure we give him enough time,” Lovullo said. “Given what he’s walked through and put his body through to get back to this point, why fast-forward that? Let’s give him 10 days and then read and react once we get to that 11th day.”

Gurriel was off to a slow start at the plate — he owns a .228/.284/.304 line through 25 games — but had begun to swing the bat better in recent games.

For Troy, this will be his first experience in the majors. Lovullo said Troy was not in Saturday’s lineup because of how late in the day the team finalized the decision to put Gurriel on the IL, but Lovullo intimated that Troy will get a chance to get regular at-bats in left field.

Troy, the 12th overall pick in 2023 out of Stanford, had a rough first full season as a pro in 2024 but has swung the bat much better the past two years. He was hitting .307/.397/.449 with 10 doubles, three triples and three homers in 44 games with Triple-A Reno this year.

“I think it’s kind of simplifying those moves where I can just see the ball better and make better swing decisions,” Troy said. “Sometimes you get caught up in the moves themselves, but as long as you’re in a good ready position to hit early, that’s been something I’ve noticed that’s been successful for me.”

Regarded as a strong pure hitter, Troy played mostly shortstop and second base the past two seasons but began seeing more significant time in the outfield this year. He has as many starts in left field (18) as he does second base this season with Reno.

In announcing the roster move, the club referred to him solely as an outfielder, and Lovullo said he likely would look elsewhere for infield help for now. (To that point, he said he plans to give Ketel Marte a start at designated hitter on Sunday but likely will have Ildemaro Vargas play second base rather than Troy.)

Lovullo said he has heard only good things about Troy’s transition to the outfield, adding that Reno manager Jeff Gardner gave a strong review of Troy’s defense, much as he did for Ryan Waldschmidt’s at the time of his call-up earlier this month.

How Tommy Troy got the call to the majors

Troy said he got a call late Friday night from Miguel Montero, the former Diamondbacks’ catcher who is now a special assistant for the club in player development. Troy was in his hotel room in Oklahoma City, where Triple-A Reno is playing this weekend, and Montero wanted him to meet him and Gardner in the lobby to “go over some video.”

“I’m like, ‘I don’t know what that’s about,’” Troy recalled. “I meet up with him and they start going over some play in the outfield. They ask if I felt good in left field and if I’m able to go play at Chase. It was an incredible moment. I had to soak it in. It felt really good. Excited to be here.”

Troy was asked when he began to process the news of his first big-league callup.

“It kind of hit when I walked away and walked back to my room,” Troy said. “It hits you all at once. I didn’t believe it at first.”

A.J. Puk makes first rehab appearance

Left-hander A.J. Puk started his rehab assignment with a scoreless inning in the Arizona Complex League on Saturday, his first time in an official game since undergoing elbow surgery last year.

Puk retired all three batters he faced, striking out one. He threw 10 pitches and his fastball sat in the 93-94 mph range. His next appearance is expected to also be in the complex league.

Puk is expected to return from the injured list sometime in early June.
