A road in Bristol City Centre will be closed today (Tuesday, May 26) for urgent repair works. Nearly the whole length of Union Street, which runs from Castle Park to St James’ Park along the western edge of Broadmead, will be shut between 8am and 5pm for patch repairs.
“We need to temporarily close Union Street, between its junctions with Wine Street and Broadmead, for urgent patch repairs on Tuesday 26 May from 8am to 5pm,” a statement on the Bristol City Council ‘Bristol on the move’ website said.
“There will be diversions in place. Thank you for your patience while we carry out these essential repairs.”
While the work takes place, westbound traffic will be diverted via The Pithay, All Saints Street, Nelson Street, Broadmead and Union Street.
Eastbound traffic will have to do a lap of the Shopping Quarter. That diversion will be via Newgate, Broad Weir, Lower Castle Street, Castle Street, north on the A4044, Bond street, The Haymarket, Bridewell Street, Nelson street, Broadmead and then onto Union street.

The Nelson Street/Broadmead bus gate will be temporarily switched off throughout the closure to allow cars to travel along the diversion route. A large number of bus services will also be affected by the Union Street closure.
According to the First Bus website, “Service 1,2,2a and 72 towards Park Street will operate normal route to Wine Street then instead of turning left to Union Street will continue ahead onto Newgate, Broad Weir, Lower Castle Street to Old Market Roundabout, turn onto Bond Street all the way to Haymarket to resume normal routes from Rupert Street. Service 1, 2, 2a and 72 towards Temple Meads will run normal routes.
“Service 3, 4, 8 from St Augustine’s Parade instead of turning onto Baldwin Street will continue along and take the next turning on the right onto Christmas Street, left onto Nelson Street to its end and follow it to Union Street (part unaffected). Service 3 & 4 will terminate on the Union Street bus stop B12, Service 8 will resume normal route.”
The Union Street work is separate from a planned overhaul of the roads around Broadmead which would increase the number of pedestrianised areas, add over a kilometre of new separated cycle lanes and upgrade public transport routes in the area. Bristol City Council is preparing its business case for that project for submission to the West of England Combined Authority, which controls funding for the scheme.
Any work on the wider upgrade of the road network around Broadmead is not expected to begin until next year.
