Inside Netherlands’ World Cup roster 2026: Virgil van Dijk leads veteran Dutch squad into FIFA tournament

One of the most talented teams in the 2026 FIFA World Cup field, the Netherlands enter this summer’s tournament looking once again to erase one of the most painful footnotes in global football history.
As the only team to have lost three World Cup finals and never win one, the Dutch are aiming to lift the 2026 trophy and put to bed this ignominious fact.
The Dutch are set to bring 26 players from all over the top clubs in Europe to North America for the World Cup, aiming to make a push for the title at the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Sporting News has all the key details on the Netherland’s roster below.

Netherlands players to watch at World Cup
One of the biggest storylines for the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup will be the performance of superstar forward Memphis Depay. Now 32 years old, Depay has moved to Brazilian club Corinthians, where he has been poor, with just one goal in just 11 games while battling a hamstring injury. Yet he was critical to the Dutch side through World Cup qualifying, scoring eight goals in eight games from June to November of 2025.
Depay has support in other forwards like Liverpool star Cody Gakpo, who had a similarly poor club season, and Donyell Malen, who enters this summer in blistering form through the second half with Roma.
At the back, the Dutch are loaded with European-level talent, as captain Virgil van Dijk is the biggest star. His club teammate Jeremie Frimpong is listed as a defender but likely to play further forward, while Jurrien Timber is coming off a strong club campaign with Arsenal.

Who is the Netherlands’ coach at the World Cup?
Dutchman Ronald Koeman will take charge of the Netherlands for the first time at a World Cup, despite being a long-tenured national-team coach.
A former star defender and midfielder through his playing career, during which he made 78 international appearances and won the 1988 European championship, Koeman was first appointed in charge of the national team in 2018 following Dick Advocaat’s failure to qualify for the World Cup later that year.
He departed in 2020 to take the manager position at Barcelona, but he returned in 2023 after the World Cup to replace the retiring Louis van Gaal. Koeman has since been in charge of the Oranje through the entire 2026 cycle, reaching the semifinals of Euro 2024 before losing to England, the first time since the 2014 World Cup that the Dutch had reached the final four of a major tournament.
Koeman is a measured coach who is tactically flexible, able to fluctuate his style of play to fit the national team’s best players. He will have his work cut out for him at the World Cup, with a loaded roster full of talent but featuring players in varying states of form.
Can Netherlands replace players on World Cup roster?
Once the final roster is official, participating teams at the World Cup could only make changes before the first game of the tournament, and only in the case of extraordinary circumstances.
According to the official tournament rules (page 32), “a player listed on the final list may only be replaced in the event of serious injury or illness up until 24 hours before the start of his team’s first match.” The exception concerns goalkeepers, who can be replaced in such circumstances at any time.
Netherlands World Cup history
The Netherlands have one of the most mercurial World Cup histories of any team around the globe. Participants in two of the first three tournaments in 1934 and 1938, the Dutch did not appear at the event again until 1974 and 1978, when they promptly made the final and lost both times.
They then failed to qualify for two straight tournaments before re-establishing themselves as titans in the modern global landscape. Yet they remain all over the map, failing to qualify for the 2002 tournament, reaching the final in 2010 and the semifinals in 2014, and then failing to qualify again in 2018.
Given this, the Dutch are the only team in World Cup history as it stands to have reached three finals and never win the title.
