Marlins starter Eury Perez leaves game against Blue Jays with strange injury

But as he was stretching in the dugout before running onto the field, Pérez appeared to wince in pain. He sat on the bench, chatted with trainers and eventually was helped to the clubhouse.

The exact nature of the injury was unclear.

Pérez had been dealing through four innings, striking out nine without allowing a run.

The six-foot-eight right-hander hit Blue Jays third baseman Kazuma Okamoto with a fastball in the fourth inning, leading to some chirping from Toronto manager John Schneider.

Marlins pitchers hit four Blue Jays on Tuesday, all on off-speed pitches. Pérez’s plunking of Okamoto came on a fastball.

Pérez, 23, is enjoying a solid third season in the bigs with a 4.91 ERA and 1.30 WHIP entering Wednesday’s game.
