Nova Scotian singer-songwriter Laura Roy bought a one-way ticket to London, England. There, she worked as a professional backing vocalist with superstars like Doja Cat and Dua Lipa, and performed at Wembley Stadium with Sabrina Carpenter.

Roy also wrote music during that time. In 2022, she received a Grammy nomination for her songwriting on Doja Cat’s album, Planet Her.

Now after years of making others sound great, Roy is stepping into her own spotlight. She recently moved back to Nova Scotia where she recorded her debut album, Late Bloomer Season. She talks to Q guest host Garvia Bailey about what it was like to write for herself and why moving back to her home province was necessary to make her new record.
