A plan to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety and support economic growth around the South Philadelphia Sports Complex was announced Thursday by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The site hosts the Philadelphia Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park, the Eagles’ Lincoln Financial Field and the Xfinity Mobile Area, home of the 76ers and Flyers.
“South Philadelphia is one of the most important economic hubs in our Commonwealth and Pennsylvanians deserve transportation infrastructure that keeps people moving safely and efficiently,” Shapiro said. “Whether families are heading to a game, workers are commuting to their jobs, or businesses are moving goods through this region, these investments will reduce traffic congestion, improve safety for fans and surrounding neighborhoods, and set the stage for explosive economic growth. My Administration brought all the leaders and stakeholders to the table to get this done — and we are committed to creating more opportunity in Philadelphia as a way to drive growth across the Commonwealth.”
Some of the nine near-term points of the “comprehensive plan” include a second left-turn lane from Front Street to I-95 North and a new entrance ramp to I-76 West on 7th Street. The plan also includes putting up new signage and conducting studies to make further improvements to traffic patterns and other upgrades in the area.
Nineteen new “smart traffic lights” will also be installed in the area. Construction on a new operations event center, located in the sports complex, will also take place. Work on the plan has already started. The state is targeting 2028 for the completion of the near-term points.
The plan was announced alongside Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, the major four Philadelphia sports teams and regional partners. It will cost “nearly $30 million,” the announcement said.
