A man who was suspected to have stabbed two people near Surrey, B.C.’s Holland Park was shot and killed by police on Friday afternoon.

One of the victims in the stabbing died, according to the Surrey Police Service (SPS), while another has been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to an SPS statement, officers were called out to a building at the 13300-block of Old Yale Road near Holland Park around 1 p.m. PT on Friday.

Officers found two people who had been stabbed — one of whom was declared dead on the scene, while another was taken to hospital, the statement says.

Police say the suspect was found a short distance away, and police shot the man with service pistols following a confrontation.

He later died in hospital.

The SPS did not release any information about the stabbing victims or the suspect who was fatally shot.

The actions of police officers will now be examined by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), B.C.’s civilian-led police oversight agency.

The IIO said in its own statement that police found one stabbing victim at the building, while the second victim was found at Holland Park, which is near the King George SkyTrain station.

The suspect in the case “was identified by witnesses as having been involved in the assaults,” the agency said.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) will be looking into the fatal stabbing, according to police.

Meanwhile, the IIO will determine whether police committed any criminal offences in the shooting, and can recommend charges once their investigation is finished.

Anyone who witnessed the stabbing or shooting is asked to contact IHIT and the IIO, respectively.
