O'Shaquie Foster outclasses Ray Ford, clashes with Shakur Stevenson in heated post-fight altercation

O’Shaquie Foster defeated one New Jersey native, and now he’s ready to take on another.

Foster retained his WBC super featherweight title with a majority decision (114-114, 116-112, 118-110) win over Ray Ford on Saturday night at the Fertitta Center in Houston.

After the decision was announced, Foster (25-3, 12 KOs) immediately focused his attention on four-division champion Shakur Stevenson, who was watching from ringside. Foster appeared to invite Stevenson to join him in the ring, with Stevenson happy to accommodate. The pair were then embroiled in a heated back-and-forth and had to be separated by security.

“I told you I was gonna beat your son,” Foster told Stevenson.

Stevenson and Ford (18-2-1, 8 KOs) share a close friendship. When Foster initially called for a fight with Stevenson, the latter challenged Foster to face Ford instead and said beating him would lead to an opportunity for Foster to share the ring with Stevenson.

On Saturday, the drama between Foster and Ford began in Round 1 when Foster intentionally tossed Ford fully out of the ring. He was inexplicably allowed to get away with the foul and avoided a point deduction by referee Jon Schorle.

The opening round was difficult to split. Ford clearly won Rounds 2 and 4 through his sharp work, particularly with straight shots. Foster controlled the third through aggression and success with the right hand. The fifth and sixth were close rounds; Foster was the more active of the pair, but Ford was accurate with counters. At the halfway point, it was unclear who was ahead or who was going to emerge with his hands raised.

Foster, however, managed to turn the screw down the stretch. He outclassed Ford in the second half of the fight to retain his title. Foster’s greater activity, front foot pressure and combination punching saw him win the majority of the final six rounds.

Ford had a good comeback round in the 10th — he started to let his hands go and there was a real sense of urgency in his work. It proved effective, as the challenger landed a brilliant reverse one-two and then had success to the body. The injection of pace, however, was short-lived.

It was clear heading into Round 11 that Ford was clearly behind and needed a strong finish, but in fact, it was the champion Foster who dominated the championship rounds to seal the victory.

Stevenson could be next for Foster. If that fight doesn’t come to fruition, a unification fight with Emanuel Navarrete or Anthony Cacace could also be explored.
