‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Will Lose Some IMAX Screenings This Week to ‘Masters of the Universe’

Following a 70% drop in revenue for its second weekend, The Mandalorian and Grogu is beginning to lose its current exclusivity over IMAX theaters. The upcoming Masters of the Universe movie announced on May 29 that the He-Man adventure will be coming to the larger-format theater from June 5. Masters of the Universe was not previously scheduled to be coming to the premium format until now, meaning The Mandalorian and Grogu now has some unexpected competition in the high-end theater department.
The Mandalorian and Grogu released on May 22 to relatively successful sales numbers over the three-day Memorial Day weekend. It earned over $81 million. However, in its second weekend at the box office, sales numbers seemed to have petered out at $25 million, dropping about 70% from the first, as the indie, lower-budget horror movies Obsession and Backrooms took the spotlight.

It’s possible that these lower sales numbers sparked a shift as the official X account for the IMAX company released a new poster highlighting He-Man’s move to the bigger format. It originally appeared that The Mandalorian and Grogu had a clear runway for at least a few weeks before the next major IMAX film, which looked to be Steven Spielberg’s upcoming alien flick, Disclosure Day.

If you haven’t gone out to see The Mandalorian and Grogu in IMAX theaters, or are looking to go again, now would be a good time to do so, as IMAX chains across the U.S. are still screening the film for now. Over the past few years, the high-end theater format has become coveted among studios and bigger-budget films, looking to offer bigger picture formatting and also looking to rake in more dollars. A prime example of this would be Marvel and Warner Brothers’ duel featuring Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three coming up in December as the two look to secure IMAX exclusivity.
