Hannah Waddingham reveals she and co-star Jason Sudeikis have ‘an ongoing love-hate relationship’

Much like the initially-frosty bond that Rebecca Welton has with football coach Ted Lasso, Hannah Waddingham has revealed to Variety that she has an “ongoing love-hate relationship” with Jason Sudeikis, her co-star from the Apple TV series.
The popular comedy-drama is due to return later this year with its fourth season, with the titular character (played by series co-creator Sudeikis) returning to AFC Richmond after previously moving back to Kansas.
The upcoming season comes three years after the third season, which itself came two years after the previous instalment. As per Variety, the delay was partly due to Sudeikis’s reportedly “endless rewrites” of the script.

Speaking to the same publication ahead of the fourth season, Waddingham shared that the very “nature” of Sudeikis’s working style means that there’s “always going to be a bit of give-and-take within a scene”.
“He hears it in the room, and then we tweak [it],” added the star, who has played Rebecca in all three seasons.
“With that boy, you’ve got to roll with the punches. He and I have an ongoing love-hate relationship [when] he changes it last minute.”
Waddingham, who has appeared in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and The Woman in Cabin 10, also spoke about the platonic relationship between Rebecca and Ted, explaining that she loved the fact that they “buck against the norm”.

Despite her “love-hate” relationship with Sudeikis, the actor did express joy that the Apple TV series was returning for a fourth season. Though the third season was billed as the conclusion, Waddingham wasn’t surprised by news of a comeback.
“[It was] too much of a cliffhanger… But I’m so glad it has [returned],” said the actor, who shared that the thought of never portraying club owner Rebecca again felt “like losing a pal”.

The fourth season, which is due to premiere in August, sees Ted manage AFC Richmond’s women’s team, which is currently in the second division. He reunites with Brendan Hunt’s Coach Willis Beard, and has a new assistant manager (played by Tanya Reynolds).
The upcoming season depicts Ted’s “biggest challenge yet”, with the logline teasing: “Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would.”
Ted Lasso streams on Apple TV, with Season 4 due to premiere on 5 August.
