Liverpool’s Greatest – No.99: Dominik Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai and his lethal right foot arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2023 as part of a midfield overhaul.

The all-action player has swung the balance of many matches in the Reds’ favour with his relentless work-rate and ability to score from long range.

Having grown up an admirer of Steven Gerrard in Hungary, Szoboszlai joined the club of his icon from RB Leipzig and had no qualms about taking the iconic No.8 shirt.

A strong debut campaign under Jürgen Klopp – which included 11 goal involvements from 45 appearances and a Carabao Cup winner’s medal – was a sign of things to come.

Szoboszlai improved on those numbers the following season by producing eight strikes and as many assists in 49 outings. Thirty-six of those came in the Premier League as part of Arne Slot’s title-winning midfield.

“We worked so hard the whole season to get to this point,” he reflected, after the championship had been clinched with four matches to spare.

“Everybody has been involved somehow from the players, the staff, the fans, the city – everybody. It was a huge moment for everyone when we defeated Tottenham and could celebrate that together.”
