The Bill and Doctor Who actor Patrick Godfrey has died at the age of 93.

The actor – who has also had roles in the likes of Ever After: A Cinderella Story, opposite Drew Barrymore – sadly died this week. His talent agency announced the news that the actor died peacefully at home.

His talent agency, Markham Froggatt & Irwin, said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm Patrick Godfrey passed away last night. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Paddy was an exceptionally talented actor and a remarkable individual, and we will miss him greatly.”

Patrick starred in a string of films and TV staples

A cause of death is yet to be revealed. Patrick is survived by his wife Amanda Walker, an actress known for her roles in 28 Weeks Later and Room With A View as well as appearances in TV staples like Heartbeat and Casualty.

They tied the knot in 1960 and went on to have children Kate, who is Head of Voice at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Richard.

Born in Finsbury in 1933, Patrick rose to fame in the 1970s after making his debut in the film Miss Julie and went on to appear in a string of British classics including Clockwise, A Room With A View and Heat and Dust, both of which also featured his wife.

During his career, Richard shared the screen with acting icons like John Cleese, Dame Judi Dench and the late Maggie Smith amongst a host of others. His later film work included roles in Les Misérables, which also starred Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Russell Crowe, as well as The Borderlands, Mr Turner and Breathe.

On television, he appeared as Major Cosworth in two episodes of Doctor Who that were broadcast in 1971 and appeared in police drama Z-Cars.

Patrick also had a stellar career in theatre

Between 1987 and 1996, he took on three different roles in The Bill and also acted in other TV staples like Midsomer Murders, My Family and Doc Martin. His final on-screen appearance was as the butler in a 2019 episode of His Dark Materials.

The star also had a prolific theatre career, treading the boards in productions of The Crucible, Witness for the Prosecution and a string of Shakespeare plays over the years.

Playwright Bill Rosenfield was one of the first to pay tribute to Patrick, writing on Facebook: “Our wonderful next-door neighbor, Patrick Godfrey, passed away peacefully last night. He was 93 years old. Our hearts go out to our friends: his wife, Amanda Walker, and their children Kate and Richard. With a theatrical career spanning nearly 70 years (!), Patrick is a prime example of what it means to be a ‘working actor.

“Over those decades, you’ve seen him countless times on film…on television…and on stage—it is a rich rollercoaster of a career, one which any actor would be proud to call their own. Yet, it’s the good neighbor we’ll remember most fondly.”

Fans also took to social media to pay respects to the star, with one writing: “Sad news. Patrick Godfrey brought so much talent and grace to the screen. May he rest in peace,” whilst another said: “The beloved British actor who brought the fairy tale dad to life has passed. A long, classy career. RIP.”
