NBA Finals: Spike Lee, New York Knicks super fan, believes 2026 is year title drought ends

From San Antonio to New York City, follow Andscape’s coverage of the 2026 NBA Finals with columnist William C. Rhoden and senior NBA writer Marc J. Spears.

I met with filmmaker Spike Lee in his Brooklyn studio to talk about his long and sometimes tortured love affair with the New York Knicks.

Lee was a teenager when the Knicks won their first title in 1970. We talked about how that moment cemented a lifetime connection to his home team and what a championship 53 years later would mean to him and the city.

William C. Rhoden is a columnist for Andscape and the author of Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete. He directs the Rhoden Fellows, a training program for aspiring journalists from HBCUs.
