Manchester United are reportedly preparing an offer for Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero. The defender was forced to apologise to teammates after being shown a red card in his last appearance at Old Trafford.
Romero has been linked with a move away from Spurs this summer, with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid said to be interested. Reports in his native Argentina now claim that United are hoping to take the upper hand and are ‘preparing an offer’ for the centre-back.
Michael Carrick is looking to revamp his squad ahead of the new season, after being appointed as permanent head coach. United are preparing for a return to the Champions League in the 2026/27 campaign.

A move for Romero would see him link up with Argentine teammate Lisandro Martinez. Both players are part of the squad for this summer’s World Cup in North America as the nation defends the trophy.
Should Romero end up at Old Trafford, he will be hoping to put bad memories of his last visit to the stadium to bed. In February, the 28-year-old was shown a 29th-minute red card for a challenge on Casemiro.
United took advantage of the extra man with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes giving them a 2-0 win.

Speaking after the game, then Spurs boss Thomas Frank revealed that Romero had apologised to his teammates for the sending off, which drew widespread criticism from pundits. He, however, highlighted that he “clearly tried to go for the ball.”
“He was sorry for the incident,” Frank said. “He apologised to his team-mates in the changing room.
“I think he’s one of the most important players. When he performs at his top, he’s driving the team.”
Romero was in the headlines ahead of the final Premier League game of the season, when he appeared set to spend Tottenham’s final-day relegation decider in Argentina while he recovered from injury. It was, however, a decision he backtracked on, with the captain present at the match.
Spurs secured safety from relegation on the final day of the season thanks to a 1-0 win over Everton.
