Horror summer continues unabated at the box office. Even comedy rebootiequels are getting in on the action. Scary Movie set a franchise record at the box office this weekend, with $55 million domestic and $105.5 globally. That is, indeed, wassup.
Early-aughts nostalgia paid off better than ’80s, as Masters of the Universe’s box-office numbers trailed behind the horror spoof. The attempt to revive the He-Man franchise made $29.3 million domestically. That’s a $25.7 million difference between the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, which, oddly enough, is just under what Backrooms made in its second week. That film came in at No. 3 with $25.9 mil, followed by Obsession in its fourth week with $25.6 million.
Closing out the top five was The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, solidifying the YouTube–to–box office gold pipeline. The film made $12.7 million, pushing The Mandalorian & Grogu to No. 6 with only $10 million to add to Josh D’Amaro’s giant pile of money. Maybe if Grogu rated theme-park food, the film would have better legs.
