Bryant Park Knicks watch party ends with 21 arrests after disorderly behavior, officer assaulted

NEW YORK (WABC) — A Knicks watch party at Bryant Park turned violent Tuesday night, leading to multiple arrests and confrontations with NYPD officers.
Thousands of fans gathered across New York City to watch Game 3, with official watch parties held at Bryant Park, Wollman Rink in Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl. Fans were required to register online in advance to attend.
Many fans had hoped there would be a watch party outside Madison Square Garden, but heightened security around the arena due to President Donald Trump’s attendance at the game meant that was not an option.
After the team’s loss, fans spilled out of Bryant Park onto neighboring streets, sparking fights resulting in 21 arrests
Crowds flooded 42nd Street, surrounding and jumping on cars and cabs, hitting windshields with lightsabers and other objects. Some members of the crowd threw beer bottles at officers.
A bus sign was knocked down and later used as a weapon in a fight. One person set fire a Spurs t-shirt, then some San Antonio fans were chased across the street.
Eight of those arrested were charged with offenses including assault on a police officer, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration.
Thirteen others were issued criminal court summonses for disorderly conduct.
PBA President Patrick Hendry said in a statement, “Last night was another shameful display from individuals who are more interested in brawling with each other, ripping up street signs and hurling objects at cops than supporting their team. We know New Yorkers are passionate about these NBA Finals, but police officers shouldn’t have to endure a barrage of mayhem after every single game. Our elected leaders need to send a stronger message and make it crystal clear that this behavior won’t be tolerated.”
NYPD officials plan to replicate Monday night’s security perimeter during Wednesday night’s Game 4, again closing the major streets bordering Madison Square Garden, which will prevent the crowds from blocking traffic like they did outside of Bryant Park.
While they plan to allow a Game 4 watch party outside Madison Square Garden, it will be inside that perimeter, with New Years Eve-style checkpoints and penning.
