Why Hugh Laurie apologized after clashing with a writer over House
Laurie took to X (formerly Twitter) to apologize to Murray over the backlash she received over his tweet in response to her innocent critique of the show. Laurie revealed that he didn’t intend to drive that response. He mentioned that he was drunk and was upset over something that had nothing to do with her.
Laurie continued, “If it’s any comfort, I got it in the neck too. I’m a thin-skinned twat, apparently, even though it wasn’t my skin. I was sticking up for the writers who I adored.” He admitted that he shouldn’t have used Bach/Kahlo/Moore names as examples but should have gone with “10,000 blues songs written around the same 12-bar chord structure.” He concluded, “I’ve listened to most of them and will keep doing so. Because we love what we love.”
This post comes a day after Laurie called out Murray for her criticism of the House episodes for having a formulaic and repetitive pattern. He cited that they did try some episodes where the House gets it right, but they were just 6 minutes long, and NBC didn’t approve of them.
“Then we tried some where House never gets it right, and the patient dies. The audience wasn’t happy. One could apply your trenchant analysis to other art forms: JS Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 portraits of herself; Henry Moore, what??” he wrote. The series is not meant for those who only notice themes around medical and hospitals, he stated.
