NHLPA asks for Babcock investigation before Oilers can hire him

According to multiple sources, the NHLPA has asked the NHL to do a full investigation into Mike Babcock’s departure from Columbus before Edmonton can officially hire him.
Previously, the league’s position was that it had to be informed that the Oilers were going to hire Babcock before it would step in.
According to those same sources, at issue is the fact that the league was prepared to investigate what happened with the Blue Jackets until Babcock resigned in September of 2023. Once he stepped down, it never happened. The union’s current position is that this should happen — and conclusions reached — before he should be eligible now.
The NHL declined comment. (It certainly can’t be thrilled this is happening during a terrific Stanley Cup Final.) But the expectation is this request will be granted and the investigation will occur. I’m not certain it would prevent the Oilers from hiring Babcock in the meantime, but it’s hard to see them doing it knowing one is imminent.
