Camp Pendleton wildfire prompts home evacuations in Oceanside

A fast moving brush fire has led to evacuation warnings in the neighborhoods that border the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton outside of San Diego.

Cal Fire said that the fire has already charred more than 500 acres of brush close to the November Training Area near Wire Mountain Housing at the Southern California military base.

The fire is active and there are threats to “critical infrastructure” that has caused evacuations to communities in Oceanside, Cal Fire reported.

“There is an active wildfire on Camp Pendleton. The fire is located in the November Training Area near Wire Mountain Housing,” a message on the base Facebook read.

“The Camp Pendleton Fire Department is currently responding. Smoke may be visible to base residents and surrounding communities. Currently, no evacuations have been ordered.”

Officials have asked people to avoid the area at this time.

The Oceanside Municipal Golf Course was evacuated and closed. Additional evacuation warnings were issued to the following zones  SDC-0427, SDC-0429, SDC-0372, and SDC-0317.

CAL Fire said due to “potential threat to life and/or property those who require additional time to evacuate, and those with pets and livestock should leave now.”

The department said that the blaze is being fought from the ground and air with airtankers being used to try to battle the burning blaze.

“We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide official updates as they become available on this page,” the update from the base read.

Rep. Mike Levin said his office is keeping a close eye on the so-called November Fire as evacuation warnings spread into neighboring Oceanside.

“My office is closely monitoring the November Fire on Camp Pendleton. We are in contact with local officials and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops,” Levin wrote on X.

Evacuation warnings have been issued for parts of Oceanside, with officials urging residents to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.

Anyone forced to evacuate is being directed to El Camino High School, which has been designated as an evacuation center.

By late Wednesday afternoon, fire officials announced that forward progress on the fire had stopped and evacuations warnings had been lifted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
