Why does Viktor Gyökeres do a mask celebration? Mystery behind Sweden star’s iconic move

MONTERREY, Mexico – When Arsenal and Sweden star forward Viktor Gyökeres scores a goal, the goal itself isn’t the only thing that sends the team’s fans into a frenzy.
Trademark celebrations are no stranger to the game’s biggest stars. Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and many more have celebrations the world knows.
Viktor Gyökeres is one more name to add to this list. When the Sweden striker scores, he interlocks his hands in front of his mouth and puts it over his mouth and nose to resemble a mask.
When Gyökeres joined Arsenal in 2025, he spoke about how his celebration first started. While on vacation, he and his friends threw out some ideas of celebrations that would improve on his previous quirky celebrations. The one idea that stuck is now his signature celebration.

On the pitch this past season, Gyökeres had plenty of opportunities to showcase this celebration. With Arsenal, he scored 21 goals in all competitions en route to a Premier League title and Champions League final appearance. With Sweden, he scored the goal that allowed the country to qualify for the World Cup.
As to the deeper meaning behind the celebration, one explanation can be found in an Instagram post from Gyökeres in 2024.
“Nobody cared until I put on the mask.” These words mimic the words from character Bane in the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises. The main villain said in the film, “No one cared who I was until I put on the mask.”
For Gyökeres, he has a chance to be a villain to his opponents and a hero for Sweden in the 2026 World Cup.
