National Indigenous Peoples Day is being celebrated locally with a sunrise ceremony that’s open to the public.
Algoma Community Legal Clinic and the City of Sault Ste. Marie have partnered to host the ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on the front lawn of the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre.
The ceremony will be held from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with coffee and snacks provided.
“All are invited to join us as we welcome the sunrise on the longest day of the year in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day,” organizers said in a social media post.
“Together, we gather in a spirit of renewal, reflection and connection through a sunrise ceremony.
“We give thanks for the gift of a new day and honour the teachings, traditions and stories that continue to guide us.“
The public is asked to bring their own chairs or blankets to the ceremony.
June 21 marks the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day, which was first proclaimed in 1996 by former Governor General of Canada Roméo LeBlanc.
