WASHINGTON (7News) — The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of the DMV until 9 p.m. This means the threat for damaging wind gusts and large hail has increased.
Storms are expected to develop across western Virginia, then track east toward the metro area. The most likely window for storms to reach inside and near the Beltway is between 4 and 5 p.m., with the greatest severe weather threat continuing through early to mid-evening.
The primary threats include damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and torrential rainfall. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible over a 1 to 3-hour period, which may lead to flooding in areas with poor drainage. While damaging winds remain the main concern, a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.
A watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop. It does not mean severe weather is occurring at your location, but residents should remain weather aware and be prepared to move indoors quickly if a warning is issued.
