INGLEWOOD, CA — Belgium has broken through against Spain.
The Red Devils did something no team has yet to do in the 2026 World Cup, scored on the Spaniards. The goal came from Charles De Ketelaere in the 41st minute of their quarterfinal matchup at SoFi Stadium on Friday, July 10.
After giving up the opening score of the match, Belgium wasted little time getting its first legitimate opportunity of the day. It was all thanks to Timothy Castagne, who placed the perfect cross to De Ketelaere as his header went right past Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon for the score.
The goal breaks Spain’s six-match streak without conceding goal, the longest in World Cup history. Goalkeeper Unai Simon entered the day not giving up a goal in 609 straight minutes and increased that to 649 minutes before Belgium’s hot attack broke through.
Belgium has now scored 13 goals in its past four matches, with eight goals in the knockout round, the most of any team still standing.
It’s the third goal for De Ketelaere in the past two matches after he recorded a brace against the United States in the round of 16.

World Cup knockout round format
The World Cup becomes a single-elimination tournament once the knockout stage begins. The 32 remaining teams have been placed into a bracket, and the field will halve itself during each ensuing round of the tournament until a winner is crowned.
The lone exception is that the two semifinal losers will play in a third-place game ahead of the World Cup final.
