Did Austin FC qualify for the MLS playoffs due to another result Sunday?

Austin FC will be in the MLS playoffs for the second time in club history.

The Verde & Black qualified for the postseason Sunday after San Jose lost to Vancouver 4-1, which meant that Austin FC could finish no lower than ninth in the Western Conference.

Currently sixth in the West, the Verde & Black have two games left to solidify their position and avoid the play-in game between the teams that finish eighth and ninth. With one more win, the Verde & Black would secure the No. 6 seed and be guaranteed at least one home playoff game for the first round in a best-of-three series.

Austin FC enters Sunday’s home match against LAFC on a three-game losing streak, though only two of those were league matches. It ends the year Oct. 18 at San Jose.

The play-in game is Oct. 22 with the playoffs starting Oct. 24.

The Verde & Black previously made the playoffs in 2022, when they advanced to the Western Conference final.
