The Braves are set to acquire veteran left-handed reliever Brent Suter from the Angels in exchange for infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr., reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Suter, 36, adds a long-relief option to an Atlanta bullpen that has frequently been stretched thin this season. The Braves have regularly cycled through long men as they try to piece together a pitching staff that’s been plagued by injuries. Suter has tossed 63 1/3 innings in 43 appearances this year, topping out at 3 2/3 frames in a given appearance.
Over the course of those 63 1/3 innings, Suter has worked to a 4.12 ERA. He’s a soft-tossing southpaw who sits 87-88 on his four-seamer and 88-89 mph on his sinker. Suter doesn’t miss many bats at a high level (20.8 K%) but has good command (6.4 BB%) and better-than-average ground-ball tendencies (48.1 GB%). He’s been tougher on righties than lefties this season but has neutral platoon splits over the course of an 11-year big league career that spans four teams (soon to be five).
