‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’ Release Date & First-Look Photos

We’re getting the first look and a release date for Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan‘s Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. The highly anticipated latest chapter in the Monster anthology will premiere September 17 on Netflix.

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story tells the story of how one young woman changed what the world believed a killer could be… all it took was an axe. The installment follows the series’ first female “monster,” played by Ella Beatty alongside Vicky Krieps as Bridget Sullivan, Rebecca Hall as Abby Borden, and Charlie Hunnam as Andrew Borden.

In the first photos, above and below, you can see a blood-covered Lizzie played by Beatty, along with Oliver Spenceman, Krieps, Hall and Hunnam.

You can also see a gallery of the characters and the real-life people they play here.

Per the official logline: When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge. The gruesome unsolved murders that follow don’t just shock the world—they give birth to an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous, and gloriously free.

Additional cast includes Billie Lourd, Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson and Jessica Barden.

Lizzie Borden gained notoriety after the murders and her trial received extensive nationwide publicity in the U.S. and has remained part of American popular culture in the decades since. She has been depicted in numerous film, television and theater adaptations, most recently in Lifetime’s The Lizzie Borden Chronicles starring Christina Ricci as Borden, and 2018 feature film Lizzie starring Chloë Sevigny as the title character and Kristen Stewart as a maid.
