We are on the cusp of Alex Ovechkin’s 21st NHL season, which opens Wednesday night when his Washington Capitals host the Boston Bruins. This was supposed to be the year when Ovechkin finally eclipsed Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record for goals. Ovechkin checked that box last spring. So this should be the season for his farewell tour, a rocking chair from one opposing franchise, a set of steak knives from the next as he visited each arena for one final time.
