Dodgers’ $17 Million Veteran Sends Pete Alonso Message After Contract Decision

The Los Angeles Dodgers are one win away from a second straight World Series appearance thanks to another offseason of blockbuster additions.

One year after signing Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto to record-breaking contracts, the Dodgers added Blake Snell, Tanner Scott and several other veteran players. And while that has been the key to their continued success, not all of those additions have worked out.

For instance, after signing a one-year, $17 million deal to join the Dodgers, veteran outfielder Michael Conforto has been left off the team’s playoff rosters. After slugging 20 homers for the San Francisco Giants last year following several productive seasons for the New York Mets earlier in his career, Conforto struggled to adjust to the Dodgers and their bet on him seems to have been misplaced in retrospect.

It seems unlikely that Conforto will return to the Dodgers after the disappointing campaign, and he could be looking for a new home as a free agent soon. That would put him in the same boat as former teammate Pete Alonso, who has indicated that he plans to opt out of his Mets contract.

“It’s hard for me to envision him in any other colors, because that is where he’s been,” Conforto said of Alonso potentially changing teams, per Mike Puma of the New York Post. “I know he’s poured his heart and soul into that team.”

Alonso’s history with the Mets still might be enough to drive a long-term reunion with a new contract this winter. But after it missed the playoffs this season, the team’s front office might be looking to move on.

Either way, there seems to be a chance that Conforto and Alonso could reunite, both on new teams next year.
