Things went from bad to worse for Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson when they spent their Friday night in Berkeley, watching Belichick’s North Carolina team lose to Cal on national television while getting relentlessly trolled.
Both Cal fans and the Bears’ scoreboard graphics team kept the spotlight shining brightly on the Carolina power couple, with some merciless messages and chants targeted at the 73-year-old Belichick’s disastrous start to his college football coaching career and at 24-year-old Hudson’s latest scandal over her involvement in the legendary coach’s life.

At multiple points during Friday’s game, the Memorial Stadium scoreboard displayed a message on the board mocking North Carolina’s recent statement backing Belichick despite a 2-3 start and major rumors about him looking to leave. That statement included a quote from athletic director Bubba Cunningham, who said Belichick “has the full support” of Carolina athletics despite it being well-known he did not want to hire Belichick.

In their “statement,” Cal mascot Oski wrote, “I am fully committed to Cal Athletics and the program we are building here. Why do you ask?” Cal executives also had a punchline: “Oski has our full support. No really, we mean it. Why else would we make this statement?”
Cal also put up a scoreboard graphic mocking the newest scandal around the couple. An episode of the “Pablo Torre Finds Out” podcast released Friday unveiled leaked footage of Hudson thoroughly criticizing the graphics on a Belichick-centered show, saying she could make the graphics herself. Hudson also cited her own work designing Belichick’s official website, which originally misspelled the coach’s name as “Belichickk.com.”

When the game was nearly over, the Cal scoreboard referenced Belichick’s site. The scoreboard declared “graphic design is my passion,” showing a variety of poses for Oski in a similar vein to Belichick’s website, had Oskii.com in a similar misspelling and even joked it was “totally real definitely not a reference.”
Cal positions its student section directly behind the visiting team’s sideline, and the students showered Belichick with chants about Hudson, at one point calling her his “high school girlfriend.” While in attendance on Friday night, SFGATE saw Cal fans crowd over the North Carolina tunnel to yell at Belichick whenever the Tar Heels left and entered the field, requiring extra stadium security to come to the seated area surrounding the tunnel.
Hudson also made the cross-country trip and was in the stadium on Friday night. Late in the first half, Hudson came down through the stands to make her way into the North Carolina tunnel, presumably for halftime. SFGATE witnessed stadium security stop Hudson to check her credential at multiple points before she was let down. During the first of those security stops, Patriots fan Garrett Oates of Martinez approached Hudson, asking to take a selfie.

In speaking to SFGATE at halftime, he said he became a Pats fan during the first winning run in the early 2000s. While wearing a white hat with a throwback “Patriot Pat” logo on it, Oates attended Friday’s game solely for the chance to see Belichick and said he “did everything I could” get an autograph.
“I’m letting him know, ‘F—k Bobby Kraft, I’m all about Bill,’” Oates said. “All I wanted was for him to look at me.”
While that didn’t happen, Oates said he immediately recognized Hudson when she was walking through the stands and towards the field before halftime and said he “had to try” for a selfie with her. According to Oates, Hudson was “very nice” but politely declined.

While that alone is a story Oates can tell, he was already ruing the missed opportunity for the photo to prove his interaction with one of the sports world’s biggest current celebrities moments later, even if only to show to his own children and friends.
“Trust me, I’ve been in great remorse and mourning that I couldn’t get that selfie,” Oates said. “Because I thought she was going to say yes, and I’m surprised she didn’t.”
On the field, the Bears took down the Tar Heels 21-18, with North Carolina effectively losing the game when Cal defensive back Brent Austin punched the football out of UNC receiver Nathan Leacock’s hands just inches in front of the goal line, taking away a would-be go-ahead touchdown for the Tar Heels. It drops North Carolina to 2-4 on the season; the Tar Heels are one of just three teams without a conference win in the 17-team ACC so far this season.

If one thing was clear after Friday night, it’s that the spotlight is only getting brighter on Belichick and Hudson as UNC’s struggles get worse.
