Titans safety fined for hip-drop tackle on Efton Chism III

The NFL has hit Kevin Winston in the wallet for a hit on Efton Chism III.

The Titans safety was fined $6,470 for what the league deemed a hip-drop tackle on a Patriots kickoff return last week in Tennessee. At 5:04 of the first quarter, Chism took a kick out and was tackled by Winston pulling him down along the left sideline.

Per the NFL, “A hip-drop tackle occurs when a defender wraps up a ball carrier and rotates or swivels his hips, unweighting himself and dropping onto ball carrier’s legs during the tackle.”

The rookie was no worse for wear after the hip drop, as Chism popped right up and didn’t miss any time. The Patriots should have been awarded a 15-yard penalty for unnecessary roughness, but no penalty flag was thrown.

A healthy scratch for the first month of the season, Chism has found a game-day role on special teams following a season-ending injury to Antonio Gibson. Over the past two games, the wideout has returned seven kickoffs for 169 yards, while seeing a handful of snaps on offense as well.
