Nearly 5 million pounds of chicken products recalled

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Almost 5 million pounds of frozen chicken products have been recalled because they might be contaminated with pieces of metals, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said.

Hormel Foods Corp. of Austin, Minnesota, is recalling about 4,874,815 pounds of foodservice ready-to-eat frozen chicken breast and thigh products, according to the FSIS.

The affected products were distributed to HRI Commercial Food Service locations nationwide from Feb. 10 through Sept. 19.

(It comes on the heels of a pork jerky recall from another company for the same reason: Pork product recalled after bits of metal found in product.)

The following products are subject to recall:

• 13.9-pound cases containing Hormel Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Thigh Meat with item code 65009 on the label.

• 13.8-pound cases containing 3-ounce Hormel Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Breast with item code 77531 on the label.

• 13.8-pound cases containing 4-ounce Hormel Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Breast with item code 46750 on the label.

• 23.8-pound cases containing 5-ounce Hormel Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Breast with item code 86206 on the label.

• 13.95-pound cases containing Boneless Chicken Breast With Rib Meat with item code 134394 on the label.

The products bear establishment number P-223 inside the USDA inspection mark. Here is the full list by item number.

The problem was discovered after the establishment received multiple complaints from foodservice customers finding metal in the products. Hormel Foods determined that the metal originated from a conveyor belt.

The FSIS is concerned some of the products may be in freezers of hotels, restaurants and institutions, which are urged to throw them away.
