American Airlines laying off some management employees

Fort Worth-based American Airlines is laying off a “small” number of its management and support employees to “right-size for the work we do today,” a company spokesperson told The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday.
“The positions are primarily at our Fort Worth headquarters and will help us optimize our performance and become even more efficient across the organization,“ said Matt Miller, an American Airlines spokesperson. ”We remain focused on continuing to invest in areas that support American’s long-term business objectives, and these targeted investments will be made thoughtfully to position our airline for continued success.”
American Airlines operates its central hub at DFW International Airport.
The job cuts come at a time when the carrier is pushing to turn its business around to compete with rival U.S. carriers Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. Last month, American reported record third-quarter revenue of $13.7 billion but still suffered a net loss of $114 million. The airline is leaning into premium business products, such as its Flagship Suites on long-haul international flights, to grow its profit margins.

CEO Robert Isom recently touted the carrier’s efforts to improve in-flight products, like new amenity kits along with new coffee and champagne partnerships. He said improved schedules, a new sales and distribution strategy, as well as product improvements have helped American “win local high value customers.”
