Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo gives his take on Trevor Lawrence’s TD run

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke with reporters before practice on Thursday, reflecting on the last drive of the Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“It’s a weird deal. Yeah, it’s a weird deal. We always talk about never assume. Like I’m talking about on a first and 10 play, backside corner, don’t assume he’s (Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence) down”, said Spagnuolo, “Don’t assume your buddy is going to get him tackled, and I think guys just got caught up in the moment (and) thought he was down. It didn’t work out that way, and I think we’ll all learn from it, and we’ve moved, and hopefully that doesn’t happen again.”

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was able to scramble for the game-winning touchdown after initially slipping and falling behind the line of scrimmage. Chris Jones was criticized for his perceived lack of effort on the play, which led to questions about the All-Pro and the unit’s late-game efficiency.

The Chiefs’ defense had been in control for most of the first half, but missed opportunities and penalties helped to decide the game’s outcome.
