Former Ohio State star, father of Buckeyes QB dies ‘unexpectedly’

Former Ohio State center Bob Maggs, a two-time All-Big Ten selection, has died “unexpectedly,” his family has announced. He was 61 years old.

An Ohio native, Maggs was a four-year letterman at Ohio State. He was also the starting center for the Buckeyes in 1985 and 1986.

“Those who knew Bob will remember him as the ‘Gentle Giant’ — for his kind heart, his warm, happy smile, and his fierce love for his family,” his obituary reads.

After his football career ended, Bob Maggs worked in sales at Mueller Roofing Distributors. When he wasn’t working, he “loved golfing, football, being by the water, and spending time with his many family and friends,” according to his obituary.

Bob’s son, Mason Maggs, is currently a walk-on quarterback for the Buckeyes.

A senior, Mason is in his fourth year with the Ohio State program after coming on board during the summer before the 2022 season.

Mason Maggs has one carry for 3 yards during his college football career.

In addition to Bob Maggs, former Ohio State star Nick Mangold also died recently, passing away Saturday night due to complications from a kidney disease.

Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day said during his press conference this week that Maggs and Mangold will be honored during Saturday’s game against Penn State.

“I just want to start off by recognizing the fact that we lost a couple of members of the Ohio State football family this week – Nick Mangold and Bob Maggs both had major impacts on this program,“ Day said. ”We’re praying for their families to have peace during this time.

“Very, very sad. I think the plan is to have a moment of silence at the game on Saturday. So just want to let those families know that we’re all thinking about them during this difficult time.”
