TreVeyon Henderson reveals getting mixed signals from sideline before scoring game-sealing TD

FOXBOROUGH – TreVeyon Henderson is being hailed for having the wherewithal to peek over at the sideline to see if he should go ahead and score a touchdown, or go down before hitting the end zone if that was the better choice to secure a win.

A day after the Patriots 28-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sparked by two long touchdown runs by Henderson, the running back said his phone blew up with texts from friends and others wondering the rationale behind his temporarily veering course, and if he did in fact get the code red to score.

Asked the final verdict, what the coaches actually motioned, and Henderson described it as being mixed.

“I seen some people saying go down, some people saying score, so it was mixed,” Henderson said.

The back indicated he was looking for one of the coaches, but everything was happening so fast.

Well behind him, Drake Maye was screaming and signaling to go down. On the sidelines, Henderson’s quick glance didn’t provide a clear answer.

“I had like two seconds to make a decision,” Henderson said. “I knew the defenders were right behind me, so I just ended up scoring.”

Henderson, taking over as the primary back with Rhamondre Stevenson’s absence, had a breakout game, with 14 carries for 147 yards and the two long scores.

“It means a lot (to contribute),” Henderson said. “God has placed me here for a reason. I just want to try my best to bring honor and glory to his name. I’m thankful to be in this position. It’s not an easy position to be in. But I’m really grateful for all the challenges and all the good times that come from being in this position. I’m thankful to be in an organization like this … it just means a lot to be here.”
